Most gastroenterology diagnostic and treatment procedures at miVIP Surgery Centers involve sedation and are provided on an outpatient basis, including but not limited to:

Upper Endoscopy, or Esophagogastroduodenscopy (EGD) — Once the patient is sedated under general anesthesia for this diagnostic procedure, the GI physician places a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera attached into the patient’s mouth and down the throat to detect ulcers, tumors, inflammation, infection, or bleeding in the esophagus, stomach, and the upper section of the small intestine (duodenum). The upper endoscopy, or EGD, is used to identify the cause of gastritis or related conditions and determine proper treatment.

Lower GI Endoscopy, or Colonoscopy — During this outpatient procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera attached is passed through the rectum, allowing the physician to clearly see into the lower gastrointestinal tract or colon (large intestine, sigmoid colon and small bowel terminal ileum). A colonoscopy can provide both diagnosis and treatment in a single minimally invasive procedure. It allows the physician to detect abnormal growths, such as polyps that may be pre-cancerous, and remove them for proper pathological analysis in the lab.

GI-related treatments that are typically referred to a general surgeon may include:

GERD & Acid Reflux Procedures — After diagnosing the underlying cause of your acid reflux, the GI doctor may refer you to a general surgeon for a minimally invasive Nissen Fundoplication surgery (wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus to stop reflux) or the LINX® Reflux Management System (a flexible band of interlinked beads that is surgically placed to tighten the upper stomach opening). One of these procedures may be performed in conjunction with a hiatal hernia repair, if needed.
