Balloon Sinuplasty for Sinus Problems

Balloon Sinuplasty Treats Sinusitis, Snoring, Sleep Apnea

Do you suffer from sinusitis, snoring or sleep apnea? There is a relatively simple, permanent solution for these common conditions!

According to Terrance Kwiatkowski, MD, an ENT specialist with miVIP Surgery Centers in Las Vegas, NV, a non-surgical procedure known as “Balloon Sinuplasty” can effectively treat sinus problems and related sleep apnea or snoring for a significant number of patients. In an article published online by The Sleep Review, Dr. Kwiatkowski outlines how minimally invasive procedures such as the in-office balloon sinuplasty may subjectively improve sleep quality and improve obstructive sleep apnea treatment compliance in many patients.

When helping patients who suffer from sleep apnea and related sinus problems, Dr. Kwiatkowski’s approach is to use the least invasive treatment available as a first step, whenever possible. The balloon sinuplasty serves this purpose in a number of patients, including those who don’t wish to use a CPAP machine for their sleep apnea.

Balloon Sinuplasty: How It Works

The in-office balloon sinus dilation, or balloon sinuplasty, is an endoscopic assisted procedure. After numbing the patient’s sinuses with a local numbing agent, Dr. Kwiatkowski gently inserts a handheld tool into the patient’s nose. At the end of this tool is a tiny balloon that will be gradually inflated once it is positioned within the affected sinus opening, one side at a time. The expansion of the balloon permanently widens and remodels the sinus bone and sinus pathways. The sinus bone heals in the open position, which helps to reduce sinus blockages and improve sinus drainage over the long term — easing a patient’s breathing, and often resolving associated snoring and sleep problems.

When the balloon sinuplasty procedure is not the most appropriate treatment option for some patients, Dr. Kwiatkowski recommends alternative measures. He has expertise in providing a range of minimally invasive ENT procedures and rhinologic surgery using the most advanced technologies, including endoscopy and robotics. At miVIP Surgery Centers in Las Vegas, Dr. Kwiatkowski utilizes robotics for sleep apnea surgeries that include the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UP3), robotic tonsillectomy, and robotic resection of the small oral, tongue, and palate lesions.
