General Surgeons at miVIP Recommend Robotic-Assisted Surgery for their Patients

As one of the first freestanding outpatient surgery facilities in the United States to provide advanced robotic technology, the team of general surgeons at miVIP Surgery Centers has been performing robotic-assisted surgeries for several years with a high level of expertise and excellent outcomes.

General surgeons at miVIP use the da Vinci Surgical System, among other innovative technologies, to perform even the most complex operations with great precision and dexterity. The surgeon controls the robotic instrumentation to achieve a wider range of motion than is possible with the human hand or other surgical methods. The surgeon’s view of the operating field is also greatly enhanced during a robotic-assisted operation, thanks to tiny camera scopes that deliver magnified, 3-D images to large viewer screens in the operating room. This enhanced visibility allows the surgeon to detect and treat internal problems that are not easily seen during other types of surgery.

Patients Reap the Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery With Master-Level Surgeons

The American College of Surgeons reports that general surgery continues to reinvent itself to the benefit of the surgical patient, stating “Due to today’s high-tech instrumentation and advanced technology, procedures such as major abdominal surgery are now replaced with minimally invasive techniques that often reduce pain, accelerate recuperation, and reduce cost without sacrificing good outcomes.”

After years of success, many general surgeons at miVIP Surgery Centers have reached the highest level of mastery using robotic instrumentation, which allows them to serve as proctors (instructors) to other surgeons learning robotic techniques. In addition to their leadership roles at local teaching hospitals, miVIP surgeons provide leadership in minimally invasive surgery at miVIP Surgery Centers that have been designated as National Mentor Observation Sites by Intuitive® Surgical, makers of the robotic da Vinci Surgical System.

The board-certified, expert surgeons at miVIP recommend the minimally robotic-assisted approach for their patients because of the many benefits, including:

  • lowered risk of complications or infection
  • less blood loss during a surgical procedure
  • less tissue damage
  • less post-procedure pain
  • faster recovery

Robotic-Assisted Procedures Offered at miVIP Surgery Centers

At miVIP Surgery Centers, our general surgeons use a robotic-assisted approach for the following procedures:

Bariatrics / Weight-loss Surgery — For people who have previously tried to follow medically supervised diet and exercise programs without success, minimally invasive bariatric surgery can be a safe, effective option for achieving substantial weight loss. At miVIP, the first step is to met with one of our bariatric experts for a free evaluation or seminar to discuss the possibility of weight loss surgery. Surgical options at miVIP include robotic-assisted gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy), gastric band, and gastric bypass. The miVIP bariatric team walks patients through every step of the weight-loss process. Many miVIP bariatric patients have shared their success stories, describing how bariatric treatment has transformed their lives.

Gallbladder Surgery / Cholecystectomy – To treat gallstones or gallbladder disease, the miVIP physician may recommend a robotic cholecystectomy, which is a procedure to remove the gallbladder. The experts at miVIP specialize in two minimally invasive options: multi-port cholecystectomy, which involves several small incisions in the abdomen for gallbladder removal; and single-port cholecystectomy, which involves single , tiny incision for gallbladder removal. The recommended treatment will depend on the patient’s individual needs.

Surgery for GERD and Acid Reflux – Many people suffering from chronic heartburn, acid reflux or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) seek effective surgical solutions to avoid taking acid-blocking medications that can lead to long-term negative side-effects. Surgical treatment for GERD and acid reflux typically eliminates the need for acid-blocking medications, and reduces the risk of esophageal cancer.

Minimally invasive surgical treatments at miVIP include the LINX® Reflux Management System — a flexible band of interlinked titanium beads with magnetic cores that prevents stomach acids from refluxing to the esophagus. Another robotic-assisted surgery that can resolve reflux is a hiatal hernia repair, which tightens the junction between the stomach and the esophagus. The nissen fundoplication, is a reflux-prevention surgery that involves wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus to support the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).

Hernia Repairs – While there are many different types of hernia, general surgeons at miVIP typically provide minimally invasive robotic-assisted hernia repair surgery to treat the most common types of hernia, including: Inguinal Hernia (abdominal hernia or groin hernia): Hiatal Hernia (diaphragm hernia or upper stomach hernia), Ventral Hernia (abdominal hernia, sometimes called an incisional hernia), Umbilical Hernia (belly button hernia), and Femoral Hernia (outer groin hernia).

Other surgeries provided by miVIP include those that treat colorectal cancers or disorders, and abdominal injuries, among others.
